| EMOTICONS |
Human languages, whether scientific or mathematical, have created technology. With a reverse effect, today’s communications technology is now breeding a new language, in the forms of emoticons (“emotions” through “icons”). E-mail and cellphone users utilize them to compensate for their inability to convey voice inflections, facial expressions, or bodily gestures in their written communication. Emoticon dictionaries are blossoming with thousands of entries. Known as Kao Maaku (face marks) in Japan and smileys in America, emoticons differ from country to country, reflecting the local culture. With this instant language, are we soon going to be living a new Babel era? |
